October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) is continuing to encourage Georgians to be proactive about their breast health.  Performing monthly breast-self exams and getting mammograms regularly can help improve life expectancy from breast cancer for women and men.  In recognition of this health observance, DCH employees are participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United States.  During breast self-exams and/or mammograms, changes in the breast and/or symptoms of breast cancer can be detected early.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer symptoms can include:  New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit), Thickening or swelling of part of the breast, Irritation or dimpling of breast skin,  Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood, Pain in any area of the breast The “Pink Ribbon” campaign is aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and is in full swing in Saudi Arabia. “We hope to raise awareness about breast cancer, its effects and causes, while letting women and families affected by this disease know that they are not alone,” said Princess Reema.

“The number of women affected by breast cancer in Saudi Arabia is growing,” said Dr. Modi Batterjee, campaign spokesperson, volunteer for the Zahra Breast Cancer Association and founding member of the Al-Bidayah Center. “There is a lack of awareness even though breast cancer affects a significant number of people. Contrary to popular knowledge, breast cancer affects both men and women. According to figures reported by the Saudi Cancer Registry, 49 percent of cancer cases reported in the Kingdom in 2005 were men, while the other 51 percent were women.

In 2005, a total of 10,513 cases of breast cancer were reported which makes breast cancer the most common form of cancer in Saudi Arabia. Avon Beauty will be sponsoring an Avon “Walk of Life” which falls in line with their Avon Breast Cancer campaign that was launched in 1992. Department of Surgery, King Edward Medical University and Surgical Oncology of Pakistan, on Saturday organised a seminar on breast cancer awareness. Komen theme song debuted: Recent TCU graduate Tim Halperin, 23, of Fort Worth, performed his song “We Fight Back” to hundreds of breast cancer survivors at the postrace survivor celebration. He wrote the lyrics based on the words of breast cancer survivors. Four women in his family had breast cancer, including his mom, who died in 1989.

A group of young women entertained the crowd with a rap until 40-year cancer survivor Noemi Alonso took the stage. Since 1996, the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Komen affiliate has raised more than $10 million for breast cancer screening, treatment and research programs. Breast cancer survivors Helen Fenning and Fiona Evans and McGrath Foundation breast care nurse Jenny Treloar were thrilled tickets have been snapped up. The McGrath Foundation uses the funds raised through events such as the high teas to employ specialist breast care nurses. “All women should be breast aware,” she said.
